Shalom Ncala was the presenter for the 2006 and 2008 series of Siyayinqoba Beat It! Siyayinqoba Beat It! 2006In the third series produced with SABC Education we featured stories on “Youth and parents talking about sex” where we spoke to young people and their parents about where they get information about sex and HIV. Every season on Siyayinqoba Beat It! we feature certain key HIV-related topics, including gender based violence. In 2006, we put together two episodes on gender violence, one featuring a young girl, raped repeatedly by her father who successfully prosecuted him and the other featuring the rape and murder of Lorna Mlofana whose killers were eventually brought to justice through community mobilisation and activism. Siyayinqoba Beat It! 2008In the current 2008 season of Siyayinqoba Beat It! a new element has been added to the show’s existing format: eight young Community Journalists, working in four of the provinces are bringing interesting stories to the show. Siyayinqoba Beat It! has adopted the slogan: Protect Yourself. Protect Others. This message can be applied to all themes touched on in the show. For example, regular testing and starting ARVs at the right time protects your health and the welfare of those who depend on you. Likewise, reducing ones number of sexual partners protects you and your partner; preventing HIV transmission from mother to child, protects the child and the mother; being screened for TB protects your health and that of those around you; and of course using condoms protects you and your partners. |
