In this episode the Beat It! Support Group discussed sex and the positive person, safer sex amongst the youth, and women's vulnerability and how it undermines safe sex initiatives. Dr Nombulelo looked at how untreated opportunistic infections further suppress the immune system. Lastly, the episode's Special Report spoke to positive learner Linda Pindani about sex and the need for the Department of Education to make condoms available at schools.
In this episode the Beat It! Support Group discusses mother-to-child-transmission of HIV. Dr Nombulelo gives sound advice on food and nutritional supplements. In the Special Report we see how nurses are making the government's PMTCT programme work in rural KwaZulu Natal.
This episode addressed disclosing ones HIV positive status to ones partner and looked at HIV in the workplace. Dr Nombulelo gave an introduction to TB and TB treatment.
In this episode the Beat It! Team looks at disclosing to the family, domestic violence and its implications for HIV prevention and at Cabinet's decision to rollout post exposure prophylaxis for rape survivors.
In this episode the links between fear, ignorance and stigma and discrimination and the impact that treatment can have on these problems was explored. In the special report we met the brave and soft spoken Babalwa, who was raped by a family member who believed that by sleeping with a virgin he will be cured. Dr Nombulelo looked at the role Cotrimoxizole plays in positive people's lives.
In this episode members of the Support Group shared their experiences of antiretrovirals. Dr Nombulelo took this further by illustrating the benefits of these drugs and the Special Report looked at the success of the MSF ARV pilot programme in Khayelitsha. The episode made an impassioned call for the roll-out of antiretroviral therapy nationally.
In this episode Support Group member Nomandla introduced us to her son Thami who is HIV positive and on ARVs. Dr Nombulelo gave the viewers an introduction to PMTCT. In the Special Report we accompanied Zackie Achmat, Mathew Damane and others to Brazil to learn more about generic drugs.
In this episode of Beat It! the Team exposed how funeral insurance companies discriminated against men and women who had passed away because of AIDS, placing additional strain on their bereaved families. Dr Nombulelo looked at the impact STDs can have in a positive person's life. The Support Group discussed ARVs in their lives and the side effects they encountered.
In this episode of Beat It! the Support Group members talked about what they are doing as individuals to turn the tide on HIV. Dr Nombulelo then went on to look at shingles and how they should be treated. In the Special Report we looked at the grants that are available and what the criteria are in order to get them.
This episode, the last in this series, covered the TAC COSATU Treatment Congress that was held in Durban from the 27th to the 29th of June 2002. The Support Group prepared a healthy yet inexpensive meal for themselves and discussed nutrition and HIV. Dr Nombulelo in turn discussed the symptoms of and the treatment for oral thrush.
